The Apollo Theater's Salon Series is an exploration of the institution's commitment to developing new works. Through the Salon Series participating artists workshop their pieces during a one-week residency at the theater followed by two live performances.
Beats, Rhymes and Tap Shoes, created by tap dancer Maurice Chestnut, is a journey through tap dance, paying tribute to the music of popular hip hop group A Tribe Called Quest. With an ensemble of five dancers and a live band, Chestnut’s new work-in-progress is an expression of tap dance through the generation of hip hop.
Maurice Chestnut is one of tap’s brightest young stars. He is an original member of the New Jersey Tap Dance Ensemble and has an extensive list of credits including his appearances throughout Europe with the Geri Allen jazz trio as a featured soloist, and his performance in productions with Savion Glover such as Bring In 'Da Noise, Bring In 'Da Funk, Improvography, Classical Savion and Tappin' Into Monk.
As a featured soloist and choreographer, Maurice skillfully develops his signature style of “playing tap” as a “live instrument.” He seamlessly weaves complex dance steps to interplay with musical notes, creating a powerful and distinctive energy. Inspired by such hoofing greats as the Nicholas Brothers and Jimmy Slyde, yet equally influenced by and connected to urban culture, Maurice Chestnut dances with truth, soul and power -- watching him dance is like walking through Harlem in the 1940’s…while bumping a hip-hop beat.
The Apollo Salon Series is an artist residency program that features works in develop. An artist Q&A will follow each performance.
