125th Street East-West Connection

From East to West, the heartbeat of Harlem --125th Street-- once bustled with theaters, clubs and other music venues that embraced African American and Latino artists and audiences.  As part of the Open House New York Weekend, the Caribbean Cultural Center African Diaspora Institute and the Apollo Theater explore the rich music and cultural history that was nurtured in West Harlem in places like the Apollo and numerous other vibrant venues along 125th Street to El Barrio/East Harlem.  Using audio and video presentations along with their vast knowledge, historians Richard Blondet, Ralph Mendez and John T. Reddick explain how the African aesthetic of West and East Harlem evolved and how Harlem’s cultural past continues to vibrate in the nation today.
