Judith Casselberry, associate professor of Africana Studies at Bowdoin College and author of The Labor of Faith: Gender and Power in Black Apostolic Pentecostalism, guides us through this journey that begins in the early 20th century and winds across the decades through the migration experience, regional influences, denominational traditions, and innovative performers to today’s contemporary Gospel music scene.
