School Day Live performances extend the “Apollo Experience” to new generations of theatre-goers while providing exciting opportunities to learn about the arts, history, and culture.

The Apollo kicks off the 2015-16 School Day Live season with Jazz! Meeting Dee Dee’s Voice stars virtuosic vocalist Dee Dee Bridgewater and members of the New Orleans Jazz Orchestra. This performance will highlight the human voice as a key instrument in a jazz ensemble. By “meeting” Dee Dee’s voice, students will learn more about the art form of jazz, the rich musical history of New Orleans, and the ability of the human voice to build narratives and spark imagination, both with and without the use of words.

Dee Dee Bridgewater has won a Tony Award for her role as Glinda the Good Witch in the original Broadway production of The Wiz. She has also won three Grammy® Awards for her musical projects and global recognition as one of Jazz music’s most consummate entertainers. She can be heard on NPR's JazzSet© with Dee Dee Bridgewater, for which she is known as the jazz lover's ears and eyes on the world of live music. Her recently released album, Dee Dee’s Feathers, is a celebration of New Orleans Jazz that will be featured during the School Day Live performance.
