Master Class seminars continue the legacy of the Apollo as a place where artists and entertainers learned informally about the principles and ethics of show business. The seminar curriculum provides participants with guidance on the basic elements of their craft, personal presentation in the public arena, business and legal considerations, and marketing and publicity.

 

Vocal Music with Janice Pendarvis
10:30 AM - 1:30 PM

 

Renown singer and voice-over actor Janice Pendarvis facilitates this workshop for vocalists. Participants will receive guidance on caring for the voice, vocal technique, breath and resonance exercises. Participants are welcome to share their voice with the class for review and feedback. For accompaniment, participants may sing a cappella, play keyboard available in the classroom, acoustic instrument, or provide a track on audio CD, MP3 player (such as an iPod). Feedback will be provided to as many as possible as time permits.

 

Songwriting with Gordon Chambers
2:00PM – 5:00PM

 

Multi award winning singer-songwriter-producer and recording artist Gordon Chambers leads this songwriting workshop for aspiring and experienced lyricists on the essentials of writing a great song. Topics covered include song structure and presentation, understanding royalties, and how to market and promote your songs. Participants may submit samples of lyrics for review. Feedback will be provided as time permits.

Gordon Chambers is an American singer-songwriter and record producer who has written songs for more than for more than 75 recording artists including Angie Stone, Yolanda Adams, The Isley Brothers, Brandy, Trey Songz, Chaka Khan, Patti Labelle, Usher, Marc Anthony, Jamie Foxx, Aretha Franklin, Whitney Houston and Beyoncé Knowles. His number-1 hits as lyricist include Anita Baker's Grammy-winning hit "I Apologize", Brownstone's Grammy-nominated hit "If You Love Me", Angie Stone's "No More Rain (In This Cloud)", the Grammy-nominated theme of 1996's Set It Off "Missing You" (performed by Brandy, Tamia, Gladys Knight and Chaka Khan) and Yolanda Adams "Someone Watching Over Me". He is the winner of eight awards from the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers (ASCAP), has four Dove Award nominations, and his songs have been nominated for three Grammy Awards.
