Between the World and Me

Free with RSVP

Tuesday, December 8 | 4:00 PM – 5:15 PM ET

First published in 2015, Between the World and Me was written as a letter to Ta-Nehisi Coates’ teenage son, and recounts the author’s experiences growing up in Baltimore’s inner city and his growing fear of daily violence against the Black community.

This November, Between The World And Me, is coming to HBO as a special event.

Based on the 2018 adaptation and staging of the book at the Apollo Theater, the HBO Special combines elements of the Apollo’s production, including powerful readings from Coates’ book, and incorporates documentary footage from the actors’ home life, archival footage, and animation.

The Apollo’s Between the World and Me Teacher’s Guide provides information on discussing race in the classroom, lesson plans that address primary themes in the book, staged reading and the HBO special, and resources that connect the work to the arts, ELA, and social studies. The Guide also includes resources that highlight historical and contemporary voices on Black life.

The workshop will be led by Between the World and Me Teacher’s Guide contributor, Benton Greene.

Recommended for Middle School and High School educators.
