Apollo Uptown Hall
50 Years After MLK: A Dream Deferred

Sunday, January 14 at 3 PM

In addition to its worldwide renown as a cultural mecca, the Apollo Theater also serves as a gathering place and “town hall” for community residents and people from all across New York City.  Apollo Uptown Hall creatively and uniquely weaves hhpanel discussions, video, texting, and performances to enhance and develop interactive forums to discover and/or address key issues.

As a continuation of WNYC’s long-standing Martin Luther King Jr. Weekend celebration and a part of Carnegie Hall’s Sixties Project, WNYC and the Apollo are proud to unite again to present Apollo Uptown Hall: 50 Years After MLK-- A Dream Deferred an amalgamation of both series.

WNYC’s Peabody Award-winning host Brian Lehrer of The Brian Lehrer Show and local All Things Considered host Jami Floyd will moderate nuanced conversations examining Dr. King’s legacy and its impact on modern social justice movements.  Harlem resident WQXR’s Terrance McKnight will serve as MC.  The event will conclude with a rousing performance by the two-time Emmy Award-winning ensemble Vy Higginsen’s Gospel For Teens – a renowned group of teenagers who study and sing the art of gospel music in Harlem as well as an excerpt from Soul Science Lab's upcoming Soundtrack '63.

The longstanding annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day celebration features musical performances and brings together audiences from Harlem and around the city with scholars, community leaders, and activists to engage in conversations that examine the future of social justice movements as we traverse the current social and political climate. They include:

Imam Talib Abdur-Rashid, Mosque of the Islamic Brotherhood

• Rosa Clemente, activist, scholar, and 2008 Vice Presidential candidate (Green Party)
• Pandit Dasa, Author and Weelbeing expert
