About The Show
Apollo Music Café Celebrates Africa Now Featuring
Tosin and Allinor
The Apollo’s annual Africa Now music festival showcases contemporary musicians from the continent who fuse local musical influences with global sounds. This year, the festival’s theme is Africa Now: Dancehall, which examines the African diaspora’s influence on today’s African music scene.
A renaissance force to be reckoned with, the music of composer, vocalist and percussionist Tosin speaks highly of his African origin, coupled with his exploration of jazz, funk, rock, reggae and Latin American music. As a prolific composer, Tosin writes and sings in Yoruba, Pidgin English and English. Over the years, he has drawn inspirations from his musical influences in the likes of Tony Allen, Art Blakey, Dennis Chambers, Bob Marley, King Sunny Ade, Fela Kuti, Manu Dibango, Majek Fashek, Keziah Jones, Sting, Seal, Peter Gabriel, and Ebo Taylor. Originally from Ghana, West Africa, Allinor has always been influenced by the music of his motherland as well as his deep roots in spiritual music. Blending western blues, highlife and reggae with traditional music, he creates a soul stirring, mood setting style of melodic rhythms. He is Journey Man, ever shouldering his guitar as he travels, empathizing and warm to each person he encounters. Before he picked up his first guitar he had already written dozens of songs, and as his strumming acumen brightens so does his ability to croon the sentiments of regular people across the globe struggling to make ends meet, finding happiness and peace in small rewards and hard work. Both his warmth and his thoughtfulness come alive in his music as he pours himself through it.
