About The Show
Apollo Music Café Featuring
Curated by Soul Factory Presents
Brooklyn, NY-native, singer-songwriter Amma Whatt’s music is a modern, multi-genre fusion of Soul, Afro-Caribbean styles, House, and Jazz. Amma’s vocal stylings, songwriting and live performances are lively and contemporary interpretations of ancestral dance, sound, spirituality and storytelling traditions.
Born to a musical family that immersed her in various African and Black American cultures, Amma was destined to become an artist with a global appeal. She learned Afro-Cuban Orisha chants and music, and Sene-Gambian dance from her parents, who toured the world and performed professionally throughout her childhood.
The American Idol finalist honed her music and production skills at the prestigious Howard University, released her debut E.P. “Maybe” in 2012, and has toured internationally as an in-demand songwriter, vocal producer, and vocalist.
In 2017, Amma was the featured lyricist and vocalist on the Grammy-nominated jazz album “Nate Smith + KINFOLK: Postcards from Everywhere.” The New York Times recognized Amma’s “…silk-infused vocals…” in a review of the critically-acclaimed project.
Amma says, “My music reflects my love for all of the musical traditions birthed by Black people from Benin to Brooklyn, and back again. My artistry is rooted in rich, lyrical storytelling that reflects modern-day life, love, joy, pain and hope.”
